In art this unit students learned how to weave using a loom. Students learned that in many cultures weaving is not only for practical use, it is also a time for members of the culture to socialize. During our art lessons students were paired up to create one tapestry. While weaving they got into deep discussions about how different cultures express themselves.

Teaching the 6+ Traits of Writing Through Picture Books

In Language this Unit we have been using picture books to teach the 6+ Traits of Writing. In case you are unfamiliar with the traits, here is a quick review of them:


Picture books can inspire deep thinking and meaningful writing for readers of all ages, and using them to help students become better writers is an effective strategy. They provide a highly visual way to engage students in reading and writing, and lead to the creation of more interesting and informative texts. Within our Daily 5 framework we have been teaching mini-lessons based on the traits using high-quality picture books (see below for a glimpse into our classrooms):
