Teaching the 6+ Traits of Writing Through Picture Books
In Language this Unit we have been using picture books to teach the 6+ Traits of Writing. In case you are unfamiliar with the traits, here is a quick review of them:
Picture books can inspire deep thinking and meaningful writing for readers of all ages, and using them to help students become better writers is an effective strategy. They provide a highly visual way to engage students in reading and writing, and lead to the creation of more interesting and informative texts. Within our Daily 5 framework we have been teaching mini-lessons based on the traits using high-quality picture books (see below for a glimpse into our classrooms):
